Overview: Making Words

The Making Words activity will help improve students' ability to encode words. They will have a chance to manipulate letters and make new words based on the sounds they hear. Each activity is developmentally matched with the books they are reading and follows a carefully designed scope and sequence.

Here's how it works:

Once students launch the Making Words activity, the opening animation serves as a demonstration of how the game will be played. When students are ready to play, they will need to hit the Begin button.

From there, the audio will prompt them to make a word. To do so, students will need to drag the letter tiles from the orange box to the three blank boxes below. Alternatively, they can double click the letter tiles to send them down. If the student would like to hear the word repeated at any point, they can click on the blue replay audio button above the orange box.

After they make the word, it will be broken apart and each part will be read aloud, followed by the word. Then the student will be prompted to change a letter to make a new word. This repeats several times.

If the student changes the wrong letter or places it in the wrong spot, the correct letter will be pulled down and read aloud, and the student will be offered another try. If the student is incorrect again, the correct letter will be pulled down and read aloud, and then the student will be moved on to the next word.

Once students have made all of the words, they've completed the activity!
