The terms Emergent, Early, Transitional, and Fluent refer to groupings of reading levels where students exhibit similar reading abilities, writing skills, and sight word proficiencies. Many of the tools and resources on the Digital Reader platform are based on these levels, as defined by Jan Richardson in The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading.
- Emergent: Pre-A (Beginner Steps) through Level C
- Early: Level D through Level I
- Transitional: Level J through Level P
- Fluent: Level Q and above
