New! MyCodables Digital Lesson Plans (March 12, 2025)

We are happy to announce our new MyCodables Digital Lesson Plans available on the Digital Reader. The lesson plans make it easier than ever to incorporate MyCodables decodable books into your phonics instruction. Each lesson plan seamlessly integrates phonemic awareness and phonics while providing opportunities for students to practice and transfer learning to continuous text. The lesson plans were carefully created to be delivered in a whole-group, small-group, or one-on-one setting. These lesson plans can be found alongside each MyCodables book in the MyCodables Bookshelf.

How to Access the Digital Lesson Plan

There are two ways teachers can find books with a Digital Lesson Plan. You can look for the Digital Lesson Plan icon above any book on the MyCodables bookshelf:

Or you can filter for books with a Digital Lesson Plan under the My Collections section on the left rail:

When you open a MyCodables book with a Digital Lesson Plan, the cover will display a Digital Lesson Plan badge:

How to Navigate Digital Lesson Plan

Once inside a book with the Lesson Plan option, click on the Lesson Plan icon on the left sidebar.  The sidebar will expand to show the Lesson Plan.

Navigate through the Lesson Plan by clicking on the arrows or dots at the bottom of the screen.

To close the Lesson Plan, click on the Digital Lesson Plan icon in the left sidebar.

Use the scroll bar between the Lesson Plan and the book to reach the bottom of the page and navigation buttons on longer lessons. The scroll bar on the far right, if one appears, will still scroll the book.

How to Use the Digital Lesson Plan

The first page of the Lesson Plan displays a summary which includes the Phonics Focus and materials needed by the teacher and students, and quick links to each part of the lesson plan:

  • English Language Learners (ELL) Tips
  • Day 1: Learning Letters and Fostering Phonemic Awareness (1–2 mins)
  • Day 1: Developing Phonics Skills (3–5 mins)
  • Day 1: Reading Books (10–13 mins)
  • Day 2: Developing Phonics Skills (3–5 mins)
  • Day 2: Reading Books (6–8 mins)
  • Day 2: Building Writing Skills (6–7 mins)
  • Suggested Progress Monitoring
  • Additional Practice Opportunities

The ELL Tips appear in summary on the second page of each lesson plan, as well as throughout the lesson plan. These are indicated by a Light Bulb icon.

Say Aloud sections are marked by the Speech Bubble icon. The teacher should read this text aloud as they follow the instructions in the lesson plan.
