Why Are Beginner Steps Books Showing Up When I Set the Level A Filter for My Bookshelf?

If you have either the Intervention or Kindergarten digital kit, you may have noticed that when you set your filter for Level A books in your Bookshelf, books that are used for the Beginner Steps lessons show up in the filtered collection as well. This is because while certain Level A books are used for Beginner Steps lessons, they are still Level A books and are therefore appropriate to use if you are looking for a Level A book for a student. The difference is actually in the lesson type, not the book: Beginner Steps lessons are shared reading lessons and Level A lessons follow a guided reading format.

Beginner Steps lessons are designed to support students entering school with limited book experience, low letter knowledge, and/or limited English proficiency. We use Level A books for these lessons, providing students with opportunities to learn concepts of print, develop phonemic awareness, and build letter knowledge, all while engaging them in real reading and writing experiences. The same books used for Beginner Steps lessons can also be used for guided reading with students working at Level A.
