Understanding Academic Terms

Academic Terms is a powerful tool that allows you to manage your schools, classrooms, teachers, students, and reading data across multiple years.

Academic Terms in the Digital Reader will typically align with your yearly cycle in the classroom. We encourage using the full year cycle for your term, for example, August to July. Academic Terms allows you to adjust schools, classrooms, teachers, and students without impacting information that is year-specific.

  • Schools: Perhaps less likely to change from year to year, this still allows you to add and remove schools to a new year without losing information from the previous year.
  • Classrooms: Physical classrooms may also be unlikely to change from year to year, though the teacher who is assigned to the classroom may likely change, requiring other information to be adjusted. Academic Terms allows you to adjust the naming of classrooms, the grade level, the username.
  • Teachers: Teachers may also change from year to year, allowing you to remove teachers from your district or add new ones as needed. You can adjust a teacher's school and classroom placement as well as their access to the Digital Reader on a year by year basis. Some teacher fields, such as name, email, and role, are specific to the user and will change across all terms.
  • Students: Students are of course the most likely to change! When importing students to your new Academic Term, the system will use the system will use the Student ID, Digital Reader ID, or SSO email to connect existing accounts. You can adjust a student's grade, school, and classroom assignment on a year by year basis. Some student fields, such as name, Student ID, current reading level, username, and password, are specific to the student and will change across all terms.
